Isac and the Yellow Bird

Isac is walking home from school when he hears a faint CHIRP coming from the plants by the garden wall. A little yellow bird is caught in garden twine, tangled at the feet, fluttering and frightened. What happens next is the whole point of the book. Isac does not grab. He knows pulling might hurt, so he puts his schoolbag down, whispers to the bird to stay still, and goes to get Dad. Dad cuts the twine. Together they make a quiet shelter, fresh water, a bowl of seeds and millet. Then comes the slow part. Izzy, as Isac names him, sips a little water the first day and eats properly the next. Isac sits beside him after school and hums while he finishes his homework, until one afternoon Izzy tilts his head and copies the tune back. WHEET! WHEET! Dad looks for Izzy's owner for many days. Nobody comes. So Isac asks the question he has been holding, and promises the care that goes with it. A warm, unhurried story for a child who loves animals, and a gentle way to talk about the difference between wanting to help and helping properly.
